Custom Comfort sees your bed as your “nightly haven” and considers each mattress it makes a “genuine piece of American craftsmanship,” according to its website. This family-owned business based in Orange has been on a mission to improve your sleep for almost 30 years.
Why does Custom Comfort regularly show up in the Best of Orange County? “I think people appreciate our straightforwardness,” said co-founder Mel Trudell, who handles marketing for the company. The salespeople are very knowledgeable, and “we tell it the way it is, and customers appreciate that,” he said.
“We spend a third of our lives in bed … if you’re not getting good quality sleep, you’re not going to perform well the next day,” he explained.
Its six Orange County locations carry mattresses made of chemical-free materials that are hand-tufted and stitched by craftsmen. The use of natural products, Trudell explained, makes them healthier and considerably more durable.
Eight collections each offer a variety of options and sizes, and custom sizes can be created. Prices range from about $700 for the largest standard size mattress set to $10,000 for the same size in top-of-the-line collections.

If you’re in the hunt for a deal, it’s hard to resist Sit ‘n Sleep’s slogan or its price-beating promise. The chain has 38 Southern California superstores, eight of them in Orange County; the newest opened in Orange this year.
Every store is outfitted with Bed Match Technology that helps determine the firmness that will give you the best night’s sleep. Beds on the showroom floor are labeled with numbers so you can find the matches. There is no house brand at Sit ‘n Sleep; stores carry six to nine nationally known names such as Tempur-pedic, Sealy, Serta and Aireloom.
“We built our business on service, selection and convenience,” said President Nelson Bercier, adding that the company has one goal: “Making sure (customers) get a good night’s sleep.”
3. The Sleep Number Store

The mattress has undergone a major techno upgrade.
If you’re skeptical, step into one of the nine Orange County locations and check out the bed wired to determine your perfect sleep number. An overhead screen shows pressure points change as air chambers in the mattress fill and empty. The bed contours to your body, according to the Minnesota-based company’s website, significantly improving your sleep.
